Review: Holiday Accommodation at Michelmersh Farm in Hampshire

Michelmersh Manor Farm is at the end of Manor Farm Lane. This no-through narrow country lane ends at the farm after winding through fields where cereals flourish and herds of sheep and cows graze. Records first mentioned a Manor house here during the tenth century. And it is known that there was a farm here during the thirteenth century. This farm was described as a large grange with a great hall, chapel and fortified gate head. Evidence of this medieval activity remain on the farm today and have been incorporated into the holiday accommodation.

Holiday accommodation at Michelmersh Manor Farm features five unique self-catering spaces, Archers Retreat, Bluebells, Foxglove, Monarchs View, and The Manor. Glamping accommodation is available in the Shepherd Hut. Guests here are very much a part of this family run mixed arable, dairy and sheep farm and may find a curious pheasant gazing into their sitting room and will certainly hear cocks crowing, cows mooing and sheep baaing. It is ideal for anyone, especially young families, looking for a base in the verdant Hampshire countryside. Far from the madding crowd yet close to some lovely towns such as Winchester, Romsey and picturesque Stockbridge on the River Test. Other local attractions include the famous Hillier Gardens and Mottisfont Abbey, a National Trust property.

All the holiday accommodation here has been beautifully converted to offer comfort and all the conveniences of modern life, including WiFi. Archers Retreat occupies one end of a medieval listed barn and has two bedrooms. It is ideal for couples and small families. Bluebells and Foxglove are also part of this barn. Bluebells has three bedrooms and Foxglove has two bedrooms. Both have their own front doors but, as Foxglove is an annex to Bluebells, they can be used together to accommodate a large party. Monarchs View, also in the historic listed barn can accommodate six guests. The Manor occupies one end of the listed farmhouse that dates back to the twelfth century and its reception rooms and three bedrooms offer the most luxurious accommodation here.

An added bonus for guests staying here is the opportunity to tour the farm with owner Fran. She will introduce you to some characters that reside here including two turkeys who have become pets and Milly the only goat on the farm. Where appropriate, guests may be invited to take part in some activities such as lambing – a favourite with children.

A task on this farm that does not require human intervention is milking the large herd of cows. Thanks to the installation of robotic milking machines the cows milk themselves. I watched in amazement as the cows waited their turn to walk into the stall to be milked. These are very happy cows, freed from the trauma of being rounded up and herded into the milking area to wait until they could be milked. At this farm they choose when they are milked resulting in very happy cows. A bottle of this fresh milk (pasteurised on the farm) is put in the fridge for new arrivals – a nice touch.

Michelmersh Farm is also the starting point for some lovely walks in the surrounding countryside. The lane leading up to the farm continues to an ancient wood where bluebells flourish in the spring. Guests can walk from the farm to the village of Timsbury. This village has two pubs, The Goat and the Bear and Ragged Staff. I can personally recommend The Goat as I dined there during my stay. The food was excellent – delicious pan-fried calves liver with mash and gravy followed by the dessert of the day, tia maria tiramisu. The latter was the best version I have tasted outside Italy.
