Orchids at Kew Gardens 01 February to 02 March 2025

The annual Orchid Festival at Kew Gardens this year is inspired by the biodiversity of Peru. A walk through the hot and temperate glass houses of the Princess Diana Conservatory takes visitors on a journey of the culture, agriculture and horticulture of this fascinating South American country. It ends with a massive cornucopia of exquisite, multi-coloured orchid blossoms streaming down under the watchful eye of a charming alpaca.

But, let’s go back to the beginning. It is a low key start as far as the orchids are concerned but a great introduction to the work of Peruvian photographer Mariano Vivanco and the art of Lima-born artist Gisella Stapleton. Her bespoke paintings are nestled amongst the permanent landscape of the conservatory.

Take your time. Admire the almost translucent petals of the delicate orchids the flourish in Peru. Delight at the hand-crafted butterflies, insects, birds and animals, created from natural materials, scattered amongst the magnificent displays of orchids. My favourite was a tableau of orchids featuring parihuanas (Andean flamingos) in mounds of blossoms around a small pool. Permanent residents of this pool, large, white coy carp drift by between the little islands of flowers.

Climb the stairs to the mezzanine floor for an overview of the exhibition and get some great close-ups of the stunning flora.
