It is a frightening experience getting completely lost in a large, strange city. I still remember my blind panic as I galloped down a road in Rome with five minutes to go before pick-up time. Expected landmarks did not appear and the buildings on either side of the road were thinning out. Finally, it occurred to me that although I was on the right road I was going the wrong way. Even worse, I was the guide on that tour and to be late would be unforgivable.
I had visited Rome many times before but on this occasion I decided to go off piste and visit some places I had never been to before. Villa Borghese was my target and having found the entrance very easily I was not concerned about finding my way out again. The Villa is a large park with interesting buildings and monuments which had distracted me. I did an about turn and raced back down the road. Only three minutes left to get there. As I emerged from the park I spotted a familiar bus. It was my bus and the driver recognised me, even though we had met for the first time that morning. He was able to stop and I jumped aboard.
By the time we reached the meeting place I had regained my composure and my companions were impressed that I was already on board the bus. I was already planning my return to Villa Borghese the next day, a free day, as I knew it would be ideal for a GPSMyCity guided travel article.
