Step into Christmas at Bournemouth

When the Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III of France was staying in Bournemouth in 1896 to improve her health she was advised to take evening strolls through the Lower Gardens to the beach. Her was lit with floating candles in coloured glass jars by one of the gardeners. This sparked a tradition that continues to this day, summer and winter. This year, from 16 November 2018 to 02 January 2019 the gardens has become a Christmas Tree Wonderland.

I followed the unique festive trail of over one hundred glittering trees and illuminations to the Christmas Market in the town square. I particularly enjoyed walking through the huge conical Wonderland Tree and watching it change colour. The Christmas Market features a bar in the large wooden Alpine Chalet and pretty wooden huts selling a variety of products not available on the High Street and some tasty snacks. I shopped at the Urban Guild hut and lunched on a delicious Yorkshire Pudding wrap at the Pudding stall – a whole meal in one wrap. Yum!

Other attractions include an ice skating ring, a huge teddy bear in front of the Upside Down House in The Triangle and the Observation Wheel on the sea front. The wheel is very popular and I loved being way above the town and seeing the Christmas illuminations from above. The cheerful Christmas music had everyone in the queue singing along. A very happy experience.
